When you need to change client numbers, select Renumber client from the Advanced utilities option of the Tools menu.

To change the client number for the current client, enter the new number you wish to assign and click OK. If the number entered is already in use, an error message will appear.

You can change client numbers for a batch of clients such as the current family, marked clients, your own clients or all clients on the database. For these batch client selections, you will have to enter a new number range, then click OK.

The outcome of the renumbering process will be summarized in the DT Max results log.

DT FileCabinet

If you have DT FileCabinet installed, you should be aware of the following before you renumber your DT Max clients.

DT Max client numbers are used to create the drawer IDs used in DT FileCabinet. The client number, along with a prefix representing the tax module (T1 > P, T2 > C, T3 > T), becomes the drawer ID in DT FileCabinet. For example, client 100 in the T1 module would have drawer ID P100 in DT FileCabinet.

Renumbering your clients in DT Max could put the two client lists out of synch. If you renumber a client in DT Max that previously existed in DT FileCabinet, it is strongly recommended that you manually update the drawer ID in DT FileCabinet by selecting File > Rename Drawer. This way, when you print to DT FileCabinet from DT Max, the documents will end up in the correct drawer. NOTE: Updating a Drawer ID in DT FileCabinet will have implications if you use DT Client Portal and you have already linked that old drawer ID to a DT Client Portal user. In such circumstances, it is extremely important to update that client in DT Client Portal by going into "Document Presentation", disabling the old drawer ID, and enabling the new drawer ID. If this link between the old drawer ID and the DT Client Portal user is not broken, you run the risk of sending another client's data to DT Client Portal should you ever reuse that old drawer ID in DT FileCabinet in the future.

Conclusion: Only renumber your DT Max clients if you have a very good reason to do so. If you do renumber your DT Max clients, be sure to make the necessary changes to DT FileCabinet and DT Client Portal (if applicable).
